I say there, what arst thou doing? Would thou likest to see something most awesome?
I say there, what arst thou doing? Would thou likest to see something most awesome?
You might of noticed some new things. Not only is the mailing list something new we’re trying but we’re doing a new reader section. Now I don’t wanna deceive you though! It truly is just the cast and about page a bit more beefed up, but yeah. Since EGN is a bit deep into a storyline right now, and will continue to be until the end of the comic, this section is and will be imperative!
But the page will be going through some changes to get in tip top shape. For those who are new and are not really getting a true sense of the new reader page, just bare with us. The next few days it should be up, ready and rearin’ to go! The New Reader Page is Now Up And Atom!
Okay, bad Futurama reference aside, I thought I’d try something new. I know not everyone checks out the facebook or tweety bird pages, so sometimes people miss the updates. Or, people like to know when storylines are done so they can go back and read it all in one foul swoop. I understand that. Or heck, they just like being well-informed and other extras. One of the things I am going to try to do, is something not new to webcomics, but it is to my little webcomic, and it’s to do a mailing list.
What will it feature you ask? Let’s go over some ground rules for it.
Well, first off, you can get it sent to your mobile device. And if you don’t dig that, no worries, normal HTML-or text-based e-mails can be done too. And for those who aren’t digging it, you can unsubscribe anytime you want. Second, none of your info is used for nefarious purposes. I just use it for the newsletter. Third, we offer some cool stuff. Like some contests for original art, custom made comics; it’ll feature colorful comic commentary which is not found on fb, rarely on twitter or anywhere else; for those who read in chunks, it’ll feature links for completed stories or, good jumping in points to a long storyline on-going, and much more.
So how can you do this? How can you join the Eastman Memorial Middle School Mailer? Well if you haven’t seen it yet, the fb fan page badge has been temporarily removed from that spot (since it is already featured on the chalkboard above) and replaced with the mailing list widget. Or if you’re not digging that, you can click here.

One of, literally, the nicest guys I’ve ever bet in the biz is seriously Wes Molebash. I was able to talk to him a great deal at Mid-Ohio Con. A real pleasure. We talked about a lot of things. Webcomics, comic books, movies, religion, life, and then, of course for him… what next? What I didn’t know is that he lightly peppered the conversation with hints of what is now one of my thrice-weekly reads(and more so cos of his amazing blogs spruced through-out) webcomic Max vs Max. When he put out that he needed help for a week or two off for the wedding, I jumped at the chance to try to help him out.
For those heading over here from Max vs Max, I’d like to welcome you all out to the site. Our current storyline is entitled Find a Need which begins here. If you’d like to start from the very beginning, then by all means, click here to get started. If you’d like to know a bit more about the comic, please visit our about page or even get acquainted with some of the cast before jumping in!
As always, any questions, comments are always appreciated. :) If you’d like to e-mail me directly, there is a contact link above, or e-mail me at jdobbins2016 [at] gmail DOT com. Or twitter me! :D
Update: hey everyone. The art sold! If any additional tweets will make it up (I have an advanced schedule thingie that handles some of the plugging that I do on the twitter feed.) So if you get the link in ebay and see it’s sold, have no fear! More ebay auctions are forthcoming. :) And congrats to the buyer! I’ll be contacting you here soon! Thanks again everyone! :)
Salutations readers!
I am selling some unique art. Yes, I’m auctioning it off on ebay. Bidding starts at $5.00 for 6 comic strips which are now a part of the FIND A NEED storyline.
What makes them unique? Well lemme tell you! The six strips are not used or rarely used at all in the comics that are posted in the FIND A NEED storyline. The dialogue is barely the same. Why, you ask?
This all harks back before the comic started August 2nd, 2009. Frankly, I have over 80 comics completed on Bristol boards and I was in the middle of makin’ them purty in photoshop for web-consumption. Eventually I began to add and modify, subtract, multiply, divide strips drawn, move them and make them out of order, or make them 2 row comic strips, etc. These six are considered a great example of this! What makes this ALSO unique is that I’m INCLUDING the ORIGINAL THUMBNAILS and SCRIPT that I use when to draw and write the comic, servicing as a ‘rough draft’ if you will.
So does this sound up your alley? Let’s hope so. So… get biddin’! CLICK HERE TO START!
PS: for those who BUY IT NOW get a cool sketch. Happy Bidding!
Hey everyone. Been getting some ‘database error connection’ errors off and on from peeps If you get one, contact me at jdobbins2016 (at) gmail dot com.
So… today is sort of a big day. Well tonight at midnight. Or, well actually it’s Tuesday, which would mean Monday evening/Tuesday Morning, er… well, whatever I’m trying to get at here, is that a year ago today, or Monday evening/Tuesday Morning-WHATEVER, aka August 3rd, 2009 is when Tales of the 8th Grade Nothing kicked into gear. Or premiered. Or whatever word you’d wish to use.
How fitting that I open up today’s almost year/it is a year/whatever it is anniversary/birthday with a new wallpaper, part of a set! It’s called Science Fair! I know, I shouldn’t of named something with spoilers listed in it, but I’m dangerous like that. It is of course, available if you offer a small donation to those who keep this site up and running. :) Every little bit helps. And the great thing is, it’s purely based on whatever you feel it’s worth. so if you’d want to donate a dollar, it’s yours. ten dollars? It’s yours. Either way, we appreciate it. Click below to be magically whisked away to get your donate on.
With that all said, for those of you who have found my little comic, and stuck with me, I appreciate it. It’s hard to get past a stigma of people who look at the comic and judge it by it’s format. I really am humbled by what this comic has achieved in 140+ strips and I can’t wait for the next few years as we achieve more..
Wednesday, Wes Molebash of the awesome comic “Max vs. Max” took the 7-Link Challenge and encouraged his readers to do the same. As per Wes, “the idea is the brainchild of Darren Rowse at ProBlogger.com, and the concept is simple: create a blog post that links to 7 other blog posts written by myself or someone else.” I too, felt like this was the way to go. :) So, I
1. Your First Comic
The character’s style has changed drastically, but the first comic is this little comic right here. But you’re going, “Jason! That isn’t the first comic though!” And you’d be right. Initially the first three comics live on the site were done way-after the fact, sorta to flesh things out a bit more and give it a nice build up of exposition. I think I ended up with the right choice, but in terms of the very first comic drawn? It was, in terms of live comic order, Comic Numba 4.
2. A Comic/Post You Enjoyed Writing The Most
In terms of writing, which I enjoyed the most of, well that depends. In terms of the whole she-bang, I really, really, really enjoyed the art and writing (or lack there of) in this particular strip. Back to writing though, I really, really enjoyed writing Jesus, he’s a thug-wannabe, or just trying to hard to seem hip but in fact, he is, but not for the reason he is trying. Which is sort of a big turn-face considering why he is there for Jason, but, I digress. :) So this one with Jesus is a big fave from what’s live….
3. A Comic/Post Which Had A Great Discussion
The Churchin’ It Up Storyline seemed to get a few comments and attracted new readers who might not normally find the website/comic, so, it was pretty neat to see new faces comment on the strip. As I know you guys don’t comment TOO often, but when you do, it gets fun or, being an artist, I have self-esteem problems so you guys are there to help unbruise my ego. :) In terms of MOST comments, it’d be this comic here. The end of the Churchin’ It Up Storyline.
4. A Comic On Someone Else’s Site You Wish You Had Written
Honestly? I’d say Axe Cop or Dr. McNinja, but then again, if I wrote them, it’d be completely different (sort of) than how they are now, and that’d remove what I LOVE about them. They truly are works of art and I honestly wouldn’t ultimately want to mess with either, if I could ‘go back in time’ kinda thing. So yeah. I know that’s a lame answer but, oh well. :)
5. Your Most Helpful Post
Well, in terms of what way, helpful? Personally I enjoyed writing my LOST finale review, because it felt like I was holding it in. Everyone around me was generally not found of it, or were tight lipped, but I love good discussion on things, geeky or otherwise, and since the last half deemed into religion, I was also interested because religion is a personal thing for people. It made me question whether or not people liked it due to their beliefs or if it helped fueled their dislike or like of the ending of the show. So I enjoyed the post, not a lot of peeps commented or commented in a way that was… well, “carrying the discussion on” to a place I would of liked but the fact that people commented to me was a-ok. (It goes back to that it helps unbruise my ego and esteem… )
6. A Comic/Post With A Title That You Are Proud Of
Hm. I’m not sure. 8th Grade Nothing isn’t built like a normal comic strip, meaning it’s not intentionally trying to be funny 100% of the time, but instead, tell a story in comic strip format, so, in terms of a title, well, I guess “Running of the Dobbins” which was a series of comics mostly done without any dialogue, set to the tune of “March of the Swivelheads” by Talking Heads. I literally didn’t know what else to call it, so…. maybe I’m mentally rewarding my own ‘last minute save’? I’ll let you decide.
7. A Comic/Post That You Wish More People Had Read
I sorta wish more people would of read the “Third Day of School” arc. From the way it looks on the back end (via statistics and google analytics), people seem to bypass or overlook the third day of school, which I felt was a really strong arc for Jason, CJ and Derrick, and finished setting up a lot of things to come.
Hope you guys enjoyed the 7 Link Comic Challenge, but now, I pose it to YOU! What are your links? (and by the way, it doesn’t have to be to EGN,) But if you have any, share them below in the comments section!
Goodness, gracious, great giant balls of fire! It’s that time of the week again for another…
It’s easier than ustream in some cases. Occasionally I’ll load a process of sketching or inking/toning or both on the youtube feed, and I thought i’d get them out there for people who didn’t know we had them. I usually make everyone aware via the facebook fan page or twitter, (more apropos to joining, yes?) For those who aren’t in those social spaces though, allow me to post what has come before, after the jump.
